Plot

The city of Chennai is rife with nefarious activities of land mafia. There are two rival gangs: one under Ali Bhai (Prakash Raj) who resides in Dubai and controls the operation through his capos Guru (Vincent Asokan), Loggu (Subbaraju) and Mona (Brindha Parekh). The other gang is operated by local goon Narasiman (Anand Raj) who operates in the Port areas. Both threaten builders and land owners into giving them hafta/protection money or real estate property, through means of force, extortion or murder. Mohamed Maideen Khan (Napoleon) arrives as the new Commissioner of Chennai and starts cracking on goons in the city.

The movie begins with Thamizh (Sathyamoorthy) (Vijay), a local goon who will kill anyone, anytime given the money is good, being chased by Loggu and his henchmen. Tamizh has taken a contract from Narasiman to beat up Loggu, which he does successfully . Impressed by his ability to handle a seasoned gangster like Loggu and his henchmen, Guru invites Tamizh to join Ali Bhai's gang. Tamizh declines the offer stating that he does not work for any gang, but is ready to do anything, given enough money. Tamizh hangs around with his friends, which include Saravana (Sriman) and Vaiyapuri.

Meanwhile, Tamizh encounters Shruthi (Asin Thottumkal) when he visits his friend's father's (Nassar) aerobics class. He is bowled over by her beautiful face, though she disregards him as a thug. Shruthi, a college going student, lives with her widowed mother and younger brother. Body Soda (Vadivelu), is a cowardly kung fu master who lives next-door to Shruthi and is the main source of comic relief of the film. He is trying to win her heart, but has had trouble doing so. Sub inspector L. Govindan (Mukesh Tiwari), is a corrupt, perverted officer in the colony where Tamizh and Shruthi live. He goes hand in glove with the land mafia, often helping them out in their activities. He is also on the payroll of Ali Bhai. He is also a lecherous man, whose eye falls on Shruthi and he decides to make her his mistress.

Tamizh's first assignment with Ali Bhai's gang is to kill a member of Narasiman's gang. However, police show up at the spot where Tamizh and the other gangsters are waiting for the kill. Tamizh distracts the cops long enough for the others to finish the task and flee. He also helps Shruthi escape from L. Govindan, in the middle of all this. She is impressed by his kindness and starts developing friendship with him. He also starts having feelings for her, which are reciprocated by Shruthi . When she expresses her feelings towards him, they are attacked by members of Narasiman's gang, whom Tamizh single handedly finishes off. Shruthi is shocked to learn that Tamizh is a seasoned gangster and has no qualms in killing people.

L.Govindan starts harassing Shruthi and her mother, and wants them to cater to his lecherous demands. On realizing that Shruthi is about to get married, he arranges to have some thugs put up a mock show of molesting Shruthi, so that no decent family will want to take her as their daughter-in-law and with no other option Shruthi and her mother will accept his demands. Tamizh gets wind of this and trashes L.Govindan's incognito, warning him that if he is responsible for this incident then things will turn very ugly for him. Later, Tamizh finds out the thugs who puts up a mock show of molesting Shruti, came to disturb her in the train. Tamil catches up the train and kills them.There Shruti confesses that she cannot forget Tamizh and she is loves him a lot. They get together.

Unable to withstand the interference by Narasiman into his gangs operations, Ali Bhai comes to Chennai and kills Narasiman alone. He also meets Tamizh to discuss with him the killing of a minister by blowing up a bomb. Tamizh however, disagrees to Ali Bhai's method as it is his principle not to kill women and children. In the middle of their argument, police raid the club and arrest Ali Bhai. His gang members retaliate by kidnapping the Commissioner's daughter and creating a lewd video, which is then released to the public. This forces the police to release Ali Bhai. After coming out, Ali Bhai starts torturing the Commissioner's daughter, who accidentally reveals that her father has placed a mole in Ali Bhai's gang and his name is Tamizh. This causes a lot of tensions and after digging up some old records they find that Tamizh's friend's father, Shanmugavel (Nasser) was formerly a circle inspector and his son Sathyamoorthy (Tamizh's friend, Sriman) is now a part of Tamizh's gang. Assuming him to be the mole, Ali Bhai kills Sathyamoorthy in front of his dad. However, it is then revealed that the person who died is not the son, but the foster son of Shamugavel, who was called Saravannan. It is then revealed that the actual son of the circle inspector, is none other than Tamil. His father explains that Thamizh is a gold medalist IPS officer, who has been masquerading as a thug so that he can penetrate the underworld and wipe it out from the inside.There Ali Bhai kills the father hoping Tamizh will come looking for the father. Tamizh goes to seek revenge of his fathers death where Shruti tries to stop him. He leaves her in the Commissioners protection and goes to find them.

The movie concludes with Thamizh avenging his father's death by finishing off Ali Bhai, his henchmen and the police inspector, Govindan.

Sura

Sura (Tamil: சுறா, English: Shark) is a 2010 Tamil action film written and directed by S. P. Rajkumar, starring Vijay in the lead role, starring in his 50th film, along with Tamannaah. Sura was produced by Sangili Murugan distributed by Sun Pictures and released worldwide on 30 April 2010, receiving negative reviews both from critics and audience.It is declared as an flop.

Plot

Sura is a story that is set in Yaazh Nagar, a fishermen hamlet in coastal Tamil Nadu. The name of the place has a lot of political significance with the recent political turmoil over the ethnic strife in the neighbouring Sri Lanka. Sura (Vijay) is born and brought up here in the company of his friend, Ambar La alias Umbrella (Vadivelu). Meanwhile, he comes across young bubbly Poornima (Tamannaah) who chooses to end her life unable to cope with the death of her pet dog.
Slowly, she becomes attracted towards Sura thanks his good deeds. They start romancing. When things seem to go well, trouble enters in the form of a greedy and corrupt Minister Samuthira Raja Dev Gill. He wants to usurp the land where these fishermen live. His attempts to take away the wealth is resisted by Sura. They cross swords with each other. The Minister hatches a conspiracy to bump off Sura with the help of his Ministerial post and authority and unleashes cops against him. Sura takes on them single-handedly and finally destroy his bad intention and help his town fishermen to get their own house as he wished.

Puliveta

Vettaikaaran (English: Hunter) is a 2009 Tamil action film directed by debutant B. Babusivan that stars Vijay and Anushka Shetty. Gopinath handled cinematography while V. T. Vijayan was the film's editor. The film, produced by AVM Productions and distributed by Sun Pictures, was launched in February 2009 and the shooting for the film commenced the following month. The film revolves around a youngster who aims to be a cop just like a local police commissioner whom he idolizes, but during the process he is stopped by the evil done to his friends by a local mobster. The film's soundtrack, composed by Vijay Antony, was released in September 2009. The film was released worldwide on 18 December 2009, receiving overal highly reviews. it is declared a super hit by trade.This film ran more than 100 days in tamil nadu It was also dubbed into Telugu as Puli Veta.

Plot

Ravi (Vijay) lives in Tuticorin. He aspires to become a policeman like his idol, Police Officer Devaraj IPS(Srihari). After completing his higher education, he joins a college in Chennai, and also earns a living by driving an auto rickshaw. During the course, he meets Suseela (Anushka Shetty) and falls in love with her instantly. With the help of her grandmother, he succeeds in winning Suseela's heart.
Soon, Ravi comes across a local thug, Chella (Ravishankar), who tries to play spoilsport in the life of his classmate Uma (Sanchita Padukone). Ravi comes to her defense and defeats Chella, hospitalizing him. His troubles start as Chella's father, a criminal don named Vedanayakam (Salim Ghouse), with the help of corrupt cop Kattabomman (Sayaji Shinde), begins to create havoc in Ravi's life. Ravi himself is thrown in jail, and only Suseela is willing to actively help him. As Ravi turns to his mentor Devaraj for help, he shockingly learns that Devaraj's family has died at the hands of Vedanayakam and that Devaraj himself has been blinded and is helpless. It is at this stage that Ravi takes up a new persona called "Police" Ravi to clean up the illegal activities of Vedanayakam and instill hope in the public, something that Devaraj was unable to do.
In the process, however, Vedanayakam kills Ravi's close friend (Sathyan), prompting Ravi to kill Chella in retribution. Vedanayakam decides soon after to become a minister, knowing that it is the only way to put a stop to Ravi's activities. As Ravi finally plans to kill Vedanayakam, knowing the danger of him becoming a minister, the police arrive to arrest Ravi. However, Ravi sees Devaraj in the crowd and announces Vedanayakam's location to him just as he is being arrested, allowing Devaraj to shoot and kill Vedanayakam, effectively taking his revenge.
In the end, Devraj is re-instituted into the police force and agrees to make Ravi a police officer. However, Ravi states that he does not need to become one, for he has found the police officer within himself and that is all he needs to succeed in life. The film ends as Ravi happily leaves with Suseela and his friends.

Vijay

Vijay (Tamil: விஜய்; born Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar on June 22, 1974), often informally referred to as Ilaya Thalapathy ("Young Commander"), is an Indian film actor and playback singer, who is based in the cinema of Tamil Nadu. He is the son of film producer and director S. A. Chandrasekhar. After performing uncredited roles as a child actor in films produced by his father, he made his debut in a lead role in the 1992 film Naalaya Theerpu. Vijay has starred in several successful popular romantic genre films such as Poove Unakkaga (1996), Kadhalukku Mariyadhai (1997), Thulladha Manamum Thullum (1999), Kushi (2000), Priyamaanavale (2000), Kaavalan (2011) and recent comedy genre blockbuster Nanban (2012). He established himself as an action hero with several successful popular action genre films with commercial aspects being notable such as Thirumalai (2003), Ghilli (2004), Thirupaachi (2005), Sivakasi (2005), Pokkiri (2007), Velayudham (2011).

He has worked as a playback singer in most of his films. During his career in the Tamil film industry, Vijay has won two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and was nominated for one Filmfare Award. He received honorary doctorate from MGR University for his philanthropic works. He also worked with several corporations as a brand ambassador and is a former brand ambassador of the Indian Premier League cricket team, Chennai Super Kings.

Early life

Vijay was born to S. A. Chandrasekhar, a film producer and director and Shobha Chandrasekhar, a Carnatic singer. He attended the Balalok Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Virugambakkam, Chennai. He began his post-secondary studies at Loyola College in Chennai and entered in the acting field.

Career

Early Career (1992–2003)

During his childhood, Vijay performed in uncredited roles as a child actor in films produced by his father. At the age of 18, Vijay debuted as a lead actor in the 1992 film Naalaya Theerpu, also produced by his father. In his second film, he co-starred with Vijayakanth in the film Sendhoorapandi. His following films Rasigan and Deva were all low-budget films. In his fifth film Rajavin Parvaiyile in 1993, he co-starred with actor Ajith Kumar, who played supporting role in that film. Also released that year was his romantic comedy Vishnu and romantic tragedy Chandralekha.

The following year, Vijay continued to pursue romantic comedy films like Coimbatore Mappillai. The Vikraman-directed Poove Unakkaga helped Vijay to become a recognisable actor. Vijay's tenth film was Vasantha Vasal which was followed by the action flicks Maanbumigu Maanavan and Selva. After more romance films in 1997, like Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen and Love Today, Vijay took up the romantic comedy film, Once More, in which he co-starred with legendary Tamil film actor Sivaji Ganesan. In his next film, the Mani Ratnam-produced Nerukku Ner, directed by Vasanth, he co-starred with Suriya who happened to make his debut that film. He wrapped up that year with his first commercial success, Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, which was directed by Fazil and earned him a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor.

In 1998, Vijay worked in Ninaithen Vandhai, Priyamudan, and Nilaave Vaa. This was followed by the films Thulladha Manamum Thullum, Endrendrum Kadhal, Nenjinile and Minsara Kanna.

At the start of the new millennium he did Kannukkul Nilavu with Fazil. He decided not to commit in films that took a year to release, which changed his trend. His next venture Kushi was directed by S. J. Suryah. At the end of the year, he acted in Priyamanavale. His 2001 comedy film Friends was directed by Siddique and featured him in leading role alongside Suriya again. Badri was an action – drama flick which he followed with the romance film, Shahjahan.

In 2002, he starred in Thamizhan alongside Priyanka Chopra who happened to make her film acting debut in that film before acting several Hindi films. Youth and Bagavathi rounded off the year. The following year 2003 began with Vaseegara and Pudhiya Geethai.

Commercial Stardom (2003–2007)

In late 2003, Vijay switched gears from a romantic hero to a mass action hero with the action-romance flick, Thirumalai, which featured him with a new look. Udhaya, a film which began filming in 2002 but became delayed, finally released at the start of 2004.

Ghilli, which was released in 2004, is considered as one of Vijay's biggest commercial successes. Directed by S. Dharani and produced by A. M. Rathnam, it was a remake of the Telugu film Okkadu, and ran for 200 days in theatres in Tamil Nadu. It was followed by Madhurey. It was in this year which Vijay began to portray his current mass-hero, stereotypical acting style, giving him a major turning point in his career. The following year, 2005, had other major films such as the Perarasu-directed Thirupaachi, the romantic flick Sachien, and another masala film, Sivakasi, again by Perarasu. Two of these films were blockbusters while Sachien became an average grosser.

His next film Aadhi, was released in 2006, and became a disaster at the box office. He later accepted to work in Pokkiri that year, the remake of the Mahesh Babu starrer of the same name. Directed by Prabhu Deva, it released in 2007 and met almost the same success Ghilli did, in which Vijay played the character of an undercover cop disguised as a local gangster.

Career Slump (2007–2010)

Late 2007, Vijay starred in the extrasensory perception thriller film Azhagiya Thamizh Magan, and for the first time, he appeared in dual roles, as both the antagonist and protagonist. In 2008, he starred in the action film Kuruvi, again under Dharani's direction.

The year 2009 started off with the action masala film Villu, which was directed by Prabhu Deva who was keen on working with him again after Pokkiri. The film featured Vijay in dual roles for the second time in his career. Vijay's next film, Vettaikaaran was directed by Babu Sivan, produced by AVM Productions and distributed by Sun Pictures. In 2010, Vijay's 50th film Sura released, which was also distributed by Sun Pictures.

Most of his films during this period did not do well at the box office, and Vijay's status as a bankable star was questioned. It was also during this period that Vijay fell out with the ruling DMK and the latter, virtually controlling the film industry at the time, tried to even end his career.

Resurgence (2011–present)

He associated with director Siddique again for Kaavalan, the Tamil remake of the Malayalam film Bodyguard. It received a positive response from both viewers and critics and was declared a successful venture at the box office, in spite of the ruling DMK trying to stall its release in many theatres. The victory of the AIADMK in the 2011 assembly elections coincided with Vijay's resurgence. During Diwali 2011, his next film, Velayudham directed by M. Raja and produced by Venu Ravichandran released and declared as a blockbuster.[9] Velayudham became one of the top grossing films of 2011.His latest release Nanban, directed by S. Shankar, became a huge blockbuster and Vijay's performance was well praised. Acclaimed actor Kamal Hassan appreciated Vijay's performance in the movie.

Vijay is currently shooting for the action-adventure film Thuppakki directed by A. R. Murugadoss and after its completion he will begin shooting for the crime-thriller Yohan: Adhyaayam Ondru directed by Gautham Menon.

He has also signed up a film entitled Thalaivan with director Vijay, which is expected to commence by late-2012. During the shooting of Thuppakki, Vijay and Santhosh Sivan were impressed by each other that Santhosh Sivan has decided to create a script for Vijay which will be an offbeat venture that Vijay has never done before.

Personal life

Family

Vijay married Sangeeta Sornalingam of Sri Lankan Tamil descent on August 25, 1999. They have two children, a son Jason Sanjay born in 2000 in London, and a daughter Divya Saasha born in 2005 in Chennai.

Brand endorsement

In the year 2002, Vijay was chosen as Coca Cola's brand ambassador in Tamil Nadu. He had acted in a variety of South Indian Coca Cola advertisements, along with Katrina Kaif. In 2008, Vijay was signed up as the star ambassador for the Indian Premier League cricket team Chennai Super Kings, along with actress Nayanthara. In January 2009, Vijay was once again chosen as the brand ambassador for Coca Cola products. As of August 2010, Vijay was signed by Jos Alukkas as their brand ambassador for Tamil Nadu and Kerala.[30][31] Tata Docomo has approached Vijay to feature in an ad shoot. Vijay would be seen for the first time for an Ad with Tata Docomo who are known for their innovative promotions all over.

Politics

In early 2011, Vijay had expressed his desire to entire politics and his father S.A. Chandrasekhar confirmed it, saying that Vijay will enter politics at the age of 40. Earlier in 2009, he had also shown interest in joining the Congress.

In 2010, he had fallen out with the ruling DMK owing to the delay of the release of his film Kaavalan in order to release the Kamal Hassan starrer Manmadhan Ambu, which was produced by DMK leader M. K. Stalin's son Udhayanidhi Stalin, its subsequent stalling of release in the theatres and various other issues related to the Tamil film industry, particular its monopoly by the ruling party. For the 2011 state assembly election, he declared his support for the AIADMK led alliance and the AIADMK responded positively by providing 3 seats to his fan club, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam.[39] He campaigned extensively for the AIADMK during the election campaign. He even made a speech in Nagapattinam, condemning the attack on the fishermen by the Sri Lankan Government.

Philanthropy

Vijay converted his fan clubs into a people's movement called Vijay Makkal Iyakkam which was officially launched at Pudukottai on 26 July 2009. The administrators of the movement periodically organise charity events for the poor which is headed by Vijay.

Vijay appeared along with Surya, R. Madhavan and Jyothika in a short commercial video outlining child poverty, labour and lack of education, titled Herova? Zerova? produced by Surya in an effort to eliminate children who drop out of school at an early age, made in association with Vishnuvardhan Induri and the Ministry of Education of Tamil Nadu

Awards and honours

Vijay received the Kalaimamani (1998) and the M. G. R. Award (2000) from the Government of Tamil Nadu. Also received an Honorary doctorate from Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute in 2007.

His first performance award was the Best Actor for Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, given by Tamil Nadu State Film Awards in 1998. He also received the Special Prize for Best Actor for Thirupaachi. Vijay also received the TVS Star City Superstar of Tomorrow (2005), the Entertainer of the Year Award (2008) for Pokkiri and Azhagiya Tamil Magan and the Favourite Hero Award (2010) for Vettaikaaran from Vijay Awards. Vijay also received best actor awards from the Madras Corporate Club Best Actor Award, Dinakaran, Film Today, Amrita Mathrubhumi Awards, and Isaiyaruvi. He received the Best Popular Tamil Actor Award from the 2010 Asianet Film Awards.

He received Edison Award for Best Actor (2012) and Superstar Rajini Award for the film Velayudham.

Snehithudu (Telugu) / Nanban (Tamil)

Nanban (English: Friend) is a 2012 Tamil comedy-drama film directed by Shankar, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Vijay, Jiiva, Srikanth, Ileana D'Cruz, Sathyan and Sathyaraj. The plot of the film illustrates the embankment of two friends on a quest for a lost buddy, who was once an optimistic and successful student. On their journey, they recount their college life and special moments that the three shared up until their lost friend secretly parted ways after convocation. During their quest, the two encounter a rivaling classmate who once made a long forgotten bet with them, a funeral that goes impossibly out of control, and a wedding they must crash.
The film's soundtrack and background score was composed by Harris Jayaraj and cinematography was handled by Manoj Paramahamsa. It is a remake of Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots (2009), which itself was adapted from the novel Five Point Someone – What not to do at IIT! by Chetan Bhagat. The film was produced by Gemini Film Circuit, who had purchased the remake rights of 3 Idiots in early 2010. A lengthy and controversial delay in casting caused commencement of filming to be pushed to a year later. Filming took place for a total of eight months in various locations in Europe and India. The film released to critical acclaimd and went to become a high commercial success. Its dubbed version in Telugu, Snehithudu, released on 26 January 2012 in Andhra Pradesh, also received good response at the box office. Nanban was screened at the Melbourne Indian Film Festival on 12 June 2012.

Plot

Venkat Ramakrishnan (Srikanth), Sevarkodi Senthil (Jiiva) and Panchavan Parivendan (Vijay) are three engineering students who share a room in the residence of Ideal Engineering College (IEC), Chennai. Venkat is studying engineering to pursue his father's wishes over his own wish — to become a wildlife photographer. Senthil is studying to raise his family's fortunes and get them out of poverty. On the other hand, Pari studies for his simple passion in machines and devices. Pari believes that success in studying is not achieved by solely memorizing definitions given by textbooks or professors, but by understanding and applying the concepts. He believes that one should follow excellence, not success, as success will come itself if excellence is followed.
However, this different approach is sneered upon by the faculties, including the deen of the college, Professor Virumandi "Virus" Santhanam (Sathyaraj). In contrast, Virus' favorite student, Srivatsan (Sathyan), also known as "Silencer", believes in mindless memorizing over understanding, in order to reach his goals of corporate and social status. Meanwhile, Pari falls in love with Virus' daughter who was a medical student Ria (Ileana D'Cruz) when he, Venkat and Senthil accidentally crash her sister's wedding banquet to obtain a free meal, which infuriates Virus. Virus labels Pari and his friends as "idiots" and continually attempts to break Pari's friendship with Venkat and Senthil.
Things further escalate when the three friends drunkenly break into Virus's house one night to allow Pari to confess his love to Ria, and urinate on the front door before fleeing. The next day, Virus threatens to rusticate Senthil unless he squeals on Pari. Not wanting to betray his friend or let down his family, Shalen attempts suicide and ends up paralyzed. Following his recovery, Senthil discards his fear of the future. Encouraged by Pari, both Senthil and Venkat gain courage to do what they were afraid to do before. Senthil takes a frank approach in an interview for a corporate job, while Venkat convinces his parents to allow him to pursue his love of wildlife photography, both successful in their endeavors.
When Virus discovers that Senthil successfully obtained a job offer, he conspires to prevent him from getting the job by creating an exam paper so tough that will deliberately fail Shalen. When Ria learns of his plan, she helps Pari and Venkat by providing them with the keys to her father's office. However, Virus catches them and expels them on the spot. Ria angrily confronts him, revealing that his son, Ria's brother, committed suicide when he could not get into IEC, like Virus demanded, even though he had no interest in engineering and instead wished to be a writer. At the same time, Ria's pregnant older sister Swetha (Anuya Bhagvath) goes into labor. A heavy rainstorm cuts all power and floods the streets, making it impossible for the ambulance to reach Swetha, and Ria is stuck at her hospital, where she had fled. Pari,Venkat and Senthil come to the rescue, along with other students from IEC. Over phone and webcam, Ria instructs She tells Pari to deliver the baby via voice over IP. After the baby is apparently stillborn, Pari resuscitates the baby by leading the students in saying "All is well". Virus reconciles with Pari and his friends, and allows them to stay for their final exams.
Their story is framed as intermittent flashbacks from the present day, ten years after Srivatsan bet that he'd become more successful than Pari. Having lost contact with Pari, who disappeared during the graduation party and went into seclusion, after five years, Senthil and Venkat begin a journey to find him. They are joined by Srivatsan, now a wealthy and successful professional in the USA, who is looking to seal a deal with a famous scientist and prospective business associate named Kosaksi Pasapugazh. When they find Pari's house in Ooty, they find a completely different man: the real Pari (S. J. Surya).
From him, they come to know that their friend was a destitute servant boy "Pappu" who loved learning, while he, the real Pari, disliked study. After seeing the boy's intelligence, the family agreed to let the servant boy study in Pari's place instead of laboring. In return, the real Pari would pocket his qualifications and after graduating, the servant boy will cease all contact. The real Pari reveals that Pappu is now a schoolteacher in Dhanushkodi. At the same time, they find out that, without Pari, Ria decided to marry the same price-obsessed banker that Pari initially talked her into dumping, and they go to rescue her from the wedding in Coimbatore. Venkat and Senthil find Ria and arrive at Pari’s school. Ria and the fake Pari rekindle their love, while Srivatsan mocks Pari for becoming a lowly school teacher. He asks Pari to sign a "Declaration of Defeat" document. When Pari's friends ask what his real name is, he reveals that he is actually Kosaksi Pasapugazh himself, and explains that teaching is just a hobby for him. Upon learning this, Srivatsan accepts his defeat and pleads his case with Kosaksi Pasapugazh to establish the business relationship he was after.
